The Ark had been captured by the Philistines (1 Sam 4:11). It remained with them 7 months (1 Sam 6:11). Then was sent back to Israel, and was at Kiriath-jearim, 10 miles northwest from Jerusalem, for 20 yeaars (1 Sam 7:2). David, having established Jerusalem as the national capital, assembled all Israel to bring the Ark, in a grand ceremonial procession, to Jerusalem. But the Uzzah incident (1 Chr 13:7-10, 2 Sam 6:3-7), resulting in his death, interrupted the procession. The Ark went to Obed-edom (13:14) for 3 months, then was brought into Jerusalem mid great rejoincing. It was placed in the tent which David had made for it (15:1). The original tent was at Gibeon (21:29).
