1 Corinthians 1:1 - Additional Comments
In 146 B.C., the city rebelled against the Roman ruler. As a result, Corinth was destroyed, remaining a ruin only sparsely inhabited for the next century. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar declared Corinth a Roman colony. By his command the city was rebuilt and repopulated with freed slaves and poor people gathered from every corner of the Mediterranean world. Corinth was made the capital of Achaia, and rapidly regained its prominence, growing to enormous proportions.
Corinth was located on two major trade routes, one north-south, and the other east-west.
Corinth had a reputation for immorality, so much so that the name "Corinth" became a verb meaning "to act immorally."
Paul wrote the letter, but it was delivered as from both Paul and Sothenes. The letter was written about AD 56, 3 years after Paul had first visited (and worked) in Corinth on his second missionary journey (Acts 18:1-18).
This Sothenes appears to be the same as in Acts 18:17. He was the ruler of the synagogue in Corinth, and had become a Christian.
Paul was called to be an apostle - he did not become one by his own choice. Thus, as an apostle, he was saying by what authority he writes this letter.
