1 Corinthians 15:12 - The Message

Now, let me ask you something profound yet troubling. If you became believers because you trusted the proclamation that Christ is alive, risen from the dead, how can you let people say that there is no such thing as a resurrection? If there’s no resurrection, there’s no living Christ. And face it—if there’s no resurrection for Christ, everything we’ve told you is smoke and mirrors, and everything you’ve staked your life on is smoke and mirrors. Not only that, but we would be guilty of telling a string of barefaced lies about God, all these affidavits we passed on to you verifying that God raised up Christ—sheer fabrications, if there’s no resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:12 - New American Standard Bible

1 Corinthians 15:12 - Additional Comments

The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection, but the Pharisees did. Likewise, some of the Corinthian Christians were saying the same thing. They were far removed from Jerusalem where all those events took place, so they may not have talked to those who saw Jesus. Paul needs to make it clear to them that the resurrection was real, because that is fundamental to what He did, and also as evidence of who He was.
Earlier in the chapter Paul lists those who saw Jesus after the resurrection (vss 4-8). It was very clear that He had actually come alive again. The funny thing is, after Jesus rose from the dead, His resurrection was central to His teaching. It verified who He was.
Many did not believe any resurrection was possible, and therefore Christ could not have risen (vs 13,16). And, if Christ had not risen, their preaching and faith was in vain, empty (vs 14). And therefore, they would be liars, false witnesses (vs 15).
And thus, you would still be responsible for your sins (vs 17), and those who've already died have perished with no new life (vs 18).
And these people, who have their hope in Christ, if this were not true, of all people are the most to be pitied. What a waste it would be. (vs 19).
But the truth is Christ did rise from the dead (vs 20).
