What an interesting phrase - "awaken to righteousness". If we don't purposely and carefully look at what righteousness is, and how it should be active in our lives, then like one who is asleep, we will miss it. It does not happen casually, it will only happen when approached with purpose.
Notice he is saying it is a shame for Christians to not have a knowledge of God. We get that through the Scriptures. Be ignorant in the world (vs 33), but be knowledgeable about God.
