In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Those without God's regeneration cannot avoid sin. They are slaves to sin. See Rom 6:16-22, which compares being slaves to sin vs. slaves to God.
Just as there are characteristics of a real dollar bill that distinguish it from a counterfeit, there are things that distinguish a real Christian from a counterfeit. What are the evidences that your faith is real?
Practicing righteousness (it takes practice!) and love of the brethren are proof of your salvation. It is the visible evidence. See also 1 John 2:4 -- if you don't do what He commands, you don't know Him. You need to be changing to ever-increasing glory (2 Cor 3:18).
James 4:17 - if you know the right thing to do and don't do it, it is sin. 1 John 3:6,9 - no one who lives in Him keeps on sinning.
Rom 6:1-2 - grace is not a license to sin. Gal 6:7-8 - what we sow we will reap. We cannot trick God or bypass the results, either way.
