1 Peter 1:1 - Additional Comments

Background:
* Written by Peter with Silvanus, in elegant Greek (because of Silvanus' (Silas') help); 2 Peter is written in basic Greek, probably written by Peter without help from others
* Written in early 60's AD, amidst some persecution. Around 65 AD Nero starts persecuting Christians, which continued for 100's of years.
* An apostle - "one sent with a message" implies function rather than status - spoke with authority
* Written to Christian churches in Roman provinces then know as Asia Minor. Today this is part of Turkey.
* Consisted primarily of Gentile Christians converted from paganism.
Purpose of letter:
* Several passages in 1 Peter parallel what Peter said in his speeches in Acts (1:20 <-> Acts 2:23, 4:5 <-> Acts 10:42, 2:7-8 <-> 4:10-11)
* Overall, message is we are in a foreign land, as ambassadors.
* It can be considered a complete summary of Christian faith and responsibility, covering from salvation, to new believers, to maturity and obedience.
* It links sound doctrine and holy living.
* Their relationship with Him would carry them though any and all of life's difficult situations no matter how fearful they may be.
* They were probably under great persecution.
* Both 1 Peter and 2 Peter end with theme of victory.
Note that Peter establishes his authority up front, reminding them of his position as one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. This is not an arrogant stand, but a statement of authority from which he can convey the messege of Jesus Christ. It is reasonable to state to others your position, as long as it is for their benefit, and not to lift yourself up.
Peter was written by Peter, and was written to be passed on to the various churches in Asia Minor. These churches consisted of many people who left Jerusalem because of persecution, so they were now considered pilgrims, the Dispersion. They left probably everything they had for their faith in Christ, but a relationship with God is worth more than any gold or silver (vs 7, 1 Cor 3:12-15).
