1 Samuel 1:2 - Additional Comments

Elkanah had trouble in his household. He favored the one wife, and there was great discourse between the wives. He should not have had 2 wives! A lot of time the trouble we have in our families and our lives are brought on by our own poor decisions. (Not always, but many times this is the origin.)
Elkanah had a divided family, and this carried with it both guilt and grief. The original cause of this division was Elkanah's marrying two wives, which was a transgression of the original institution of marriage, whic Jesus mentions in Matt 19:5-9. From the beginning it was not so. It caused trouble in Abraham and Jacob's family, and here in Elkanah's. How much better does the law of God provide for our comfort and ease in this world than we would have if we were left to our own ways! It is probable that Elkanah married Hannah first, and, because he had no children by her as soon as he hoped, he married Peninnah, who bore him children indeed, but it turned out to be much trouble for him.
Thus are men often beaten with rods of their own making. What devices and plans have you made that are counter to God's Word and His will that have caused you pain? And if not now, will in the future.
Scripture says you cannot love both God and mammon (Matt 6:24). The general principle is you cannot have 2 conflicting loves, and nowhere in Scripture do we find a man with more than one wife who loves both. Pistol Pete Maravich loved basketball until he became a Christian, and then his love and devotion changed towards God. Do you have a passion for anything that would diminish your devotion to God? Do you have a passion for anything that would diminish your devotion to your family, or your spouse? You cannot have 2 loves in conflict with each other. You need to make your choices.
From Brad Paisley's song "I'm Gonna Miss Her":
Well I love her
But I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon
Well I'm gonna miss her
