1 Samuel 17:49 - Additional Comments

When we face our enemies and challenges, we are typically want them to be destroyed. See God's promise to us in Luke 18:1-8.
Yet, while God may take care of us in this way, the "new testament" is the way God really wants us to approach others. This is the attitude we are to have - "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Rom 12:21).
"But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you" (Matt 5:44)
(Note at the end of Luke 18:1-8, what God is looking for is faith, not a desire for revenge.)
Note how skilled David was with his weapon! God wants our "weapon" of choice to be the sword of the spirit - the Word (Eph 6:17).
This was not David's victory - it was the Lord's (see vs 46). See Zech 4:6 - "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit." John 5:4 "for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith."
It is not our skill, but God's hand that gives success. We need to make sure we give God credit where credit is due. It is difficult to show to the world how God is the source of success, even though it looks like we were the ones doing the job. Also, to show the world how God is the source of truth. Yet we need to as often as we can.
