1 Samuel 5:2 - Additional Comments
The Philistine god Dagon was one in their pantheon of gods, possible the main god. He was the god of grain and agriculture. Since the Philistines were a maritime people, "It is said that Dagon, from his navel down, had the form of a fish..., and from his navel up, the form of a man, as it is said, his two hands were cut off." (see vs 4) He may have originally been more of the form of a man, but evolved into half man, half fish.
They set the ark by the statue of Dagon. Twice, once a day for the next 2 days, the status of Dagon fell in the presence of the ark, the second fall being the worse. After that, they left the statue fallen, and never again ventured into the temple, except to get the ark (vs 8).
