1 Thessalonians 5:1 - The Message

I don’t think, friends, that I need to deal with the question of when all this is going to happen. You know as well as I that the day of the Master’s coming can’t be posted on our calendars. He won’t call ahead and make an appointment any more than a burglar would. About the time everybody’s walking around complacently, congratulating each other—"We’ve sure got it made! Now we can take it easy!"—suddenly everything will fall apart. It’s going to come as suddenly and inescapably as birth pangs to a pregnant woman.

1 Thessalonians 5:1 - Additional Comments

Regarding the timing of the end times, Paul is saying that it is useless to try to determine it. Even Christ did not know when it would be (Matt 24:36,44,50). What is certain is that Christ will return, and the time is set - we just can't know it. But we are told to watch for it. Jesus says...
Mark 13:35 "Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming; in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning;
Mark 13:36 "lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping.
Mark 13:37 "And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!"
God has revealed some things, and other things he has chosen to hide. Why do you think God hides this from us? Could it be that he knows our nature, and knows how many would slack off if we knew His arrival was not anytime soon. Do you slack off in your Christian walk, in your fight against sin?
Is it hard to keep going, with all your responsibilities?
In the first essay, "Economy," Henry David Thoreau comments that many people men are slaves to their responsibilities and enslaved to others. He concludes: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation." Jay Carsey felt that way, and gave up, abandoning everything - his job, home, friends, and finances ("Exit the Rainmaker"). Our life without Christ has little hope, but with Christ we have all hope. May your hope be rekindled as you look closer at Christ.
