2 Corinthians 1:4

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

God comforts us so we can comfort others. The only way for this to happen is if we make ourselves available to help others.
The only successful source of comfort is from God (vs 3 - He is the God of all comfort). We need to comfort others with that same comfort with which we are comforted. That means we need to see any successful comfort we have received as having come from God. We cannot pass it on unless we understand its source.
