2 Corinthians 10:1 - The Message

And now a personal but most urgent matter; I write in the gentle but firm spirit of Christ. I hear that I’m being painted as cringing and wishy-washy when I’m with you, but harsh and demanding when at a safe distance writing letters. Please don’t force me to take a hard line when I’m present with you. Don’t think that I’ll hesitate a single minute to stand up to those who say I’m an unprincipled opportunist. Then they’ll have to eat their words.

2 Corinthians 10:1 - Additional Comments

Here two characteristics of Christ are listed - meekness and gentleness. The Greek word for gentleness describes actions, while the Greek for meekness descibes a condition of the mind and heart.
Typically people think of meekness as a condition where the person can't help himself, but that is wrong. Meekness is the result of power. Meekness is power under control. Jesus had the infinite resources of God as His disposal, yet never used it for selfish purposes. Meekness is balance: neither raising yourself above others nor being cast down, because meekness is not occupied with self at all. It doesn't compare with others (see 10:12). It is using strength to help others.
See Isa 42:1-4 on the meekness of Christ. What a contrast of how most rulers of the earth operate! They get there at the expense of others. Jesus in His position has infinite love for others.
