2 Corinthians 2:4

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

This "letter of tears" referred to here was probably written between 1 and 2 Corinthians. Apparently it was a very painful letter to write. It appears this was because of a particular individual in Corinth (vs 5). Paul was grieved not by this person (vs 5), but by how this person was affecting the others in the church.
