For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart.

It is interesting how those who challenge these Christians (both Paul and the Corinthians) are referred to - these are ones who cannot boast in the quality of their hearts.
This implies that those who honor God can boast of what is in their hearts, whereas those who disregard God cannot. God has placed His laws on everyone's conscience, so people know whether the activity of their hearts is good or not.
Rom 2:14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves,
Rom 2:15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)
