In the day of salvation we received the grace of God (vs 1). They are now in this state of grace, in this state of salvation, having been saved. Paul is urging them not to waste (be in vain - vs 1) this great gift. God has so much in store for believers, but we can easily quench the Spirit, and keep God at a distance. Be who God wants you to be, and in doing so grasp the riches of His grace.
