Because the stakes are so high, even though you’re up-to-date on all this truth and practice it inside and out, I’m not going to let up for a minute in calling you to attention before it. This is the post to which I’ve been assigned—keeping you alert with frequent reminders—and I’m sticking to it as long as I live. I know that I’m to die soon; the Master has made that quite clear to me. And so I am especially eager that you have all this down in black and white so that after I die, you’ll have it for ready reference.

2 Peter 1:12 - Additional Comments

Peter is not negligent in reminding them, for if ministers be negligent in their work, it can hardly be expected that the people will be diligent in theirs. It is sad that the Christian fortitude of the masses depends so much on the Christian fortitude of the leaders. May we each be strong from our own quality relationship with God (Job 12:13 - "With Him are wisdom and strength..."), not needing the leaders to have a quality relationship with God.
May we also be strong when others are not nearby. We all have some accountability, whether direct (e.g. family or accountability partners) or indirect (e.g. those who see you in church). How do you do when you are away from them, like when you travel? How much of the quality of your walk is because of those around you?
Renew your commitment to be holy and strong even if the leaders aren't calling you in that direction, and when others who know you aren't nearby. Renew your commitment to be holy and strong in the quiet private moments when no one else is looking. Renew your commitment to be holy and strong, because that is the true relationship you have with God.
How can you have help in this? By "knowing and being established in the present truth". We are promised we can know the truth, and the truth will make us free (John 8:32). Wise men over the ages have sought the truth, and we have it!
How can we understand the truth? We need to be fully aquainted with God, who He is, and His Law. It is truth, and it will ESTABLISH you, will secure you, will hold you, will keep you strong. Can you measure time in the Word and prayer with your level of holiness and strength? Is is a simple formula, a simple relationship.
Since most individuals need ministers to stay focused on God, this shows the responsiblity that ministers needs to accept and excel with. Ministers need to stay strong, in their personal walk and in their leadership - they need to never be negligent in their calling, like Peter.
This letter is written late in Peter's life (vss 14-15), and he is still keeping on. This is a challenge to fulfill your calling consistently over time, so at the end you can say like Paul, you fought the good fight, you finished the race, you kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7).
Note also that it's not just the minister's job to teach, but to reteach and to remind. And we ourselves need to constantly be relearning what we have already learned, as we so easily forget. We should never be satisifed with what we know, nor neglect restudying what we already know.
