Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

This divine nature of God's -- we can become partakers of it. We can have holiness.
This frees us from the bondage of sin, from the corruption of the world. The world is continually attempting to corrupt us.
In the world, corruption reigns. It is what rules. 1 John 5:19 says that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
Some say all sin is from pride. Pride and lust are similar - both want for the self, instead of giving.
