Peter calls them "beloved". All ministers need love in their ministry to make it effective. Without love, we are but "a sounding brass or a clanging cymbal" (1 Cor 13:1). Love is greater than faith or hope (1 Cor 13:13).
How great the readers must have felt to truly know that Peter loved them. What is the evidence of love?
I realized that if I am harsh to my daughter, her knowing I love her isn't enough. I can tell her all I want, but she isn't seeing it. I need to be tender and understanding to her.
Like Peter, how great it is when followers know that their ministers truly love them. What are the traits of a minster whose love is evident to the followers?
But wait, all of us are called to minister to others. However you minster to others, what is their perception of you? We are commanded and earnestly exhorted to love others. Do people see in you that you care for them?
So Peter addresses them as Beloved. This is a love letter!
Once again Peter is telling him (as in vs 1:12) that these are not new words, they are reminders. Oh how we need to be constantly reminded of the ways of God, because oh how we so easily and quickly drift from His ways!
