He reminds them again to pay attention to the writings of the prophets (as he did in vs 1:19-21). He also adds at this point the teachings of the apostles. If we do, we are setting our minds on the things above (Col 3:2), and being conformed to the image of His Son (Rom 8:29 ).
This also validates that the apostles' writings are to be considered part of Holy Scripture (see also that 3:16 refers to them directly as Scripture).
We are to be very careful to pay attention to these words, since scoffers (vs 3-4) will attempt to distort the words and confuse the faithful.
