How did this news come to David? It was speculation, rumors, gossip.
What happens in a church is something changes (like an assistant pastor leaving), but the reasons why cannot be made public. What happens? Speculation, rumors, gossip. And it is sin.
What does the Bible say about gossip? Gossipers are not faithful (Prov 11:13), saying things they should not say (1 Tim 5:13). Gossip separates friends (Prov 16:28), causes strife (Prov 26:20), and is listed sevearl times with the acts of unrighteousness (Rom 1:29, 2 Cor 12:20).
A research paper by Dean Hoge and Jacqueline Wenger reveal the main reasons why pastors leave the ministry. In their research, they disocvered one glaring similarity regarding pastors who have left local church ministry: "These pastors ..., for whatever reason [were] not part of ministerial friendship groups or action groups." Where intimate relationships are concerned, many pastors have none. Face it, who can they open up to where they might not become an item of betraying gossip, perceived as weak, or jeopardize their own job?
