"The kings sons" - these are Absalom and Amnon's brothers by different mothers.
They all fled, not realizing that Absalom was only aiming to kill Amnon.
Funny, I would not think fleeing on a mule would be very fast. Mules typically run at between 5-7 mph, but some may run faster. Humans can run faster than most mules. Probably what happened is "fled" meant they left quickly, with their belongings on their mule, which is how they had been travelling.
