Deuteronomy 4:9 - Additional Comments

We are to:
1. Diligently (vigorously) pay attention to what I see and do. I must align both with God's laws, for if not, I will forget them. I must do this "all the days of my life." (See also Deut 6:2.)
2. Teach these laws to our children and grandchildren. Again we are asked to teach our children in verse 10. See also Gen 18:19, Psalms 78:5, Prov 22:6. The things we learn from God and experience with Him, must be taught to our children. God does things so He can be clearly seen, not just by those present, but in generations to come. Build the pile of rocks to declare what He has done. (See Joshua 4:20-24.)
Why don't we teach our children God's laws and how to obey them?
-- We struggle ourselves with knowing God's laws and obeying them. (If your chlldren were asked today about your spiritua life, what would they say? Do they see the evidence? Is it enough for a court of law? See the notes on 2 Cor 13:5.)
-- We don't have the priority and/or time.
How can we teach our children?
-- Teach anywhere and anytime. See Deut 6:7. Faith comes from hearing (Romans 10:17).
-- Teach them to value God's Word, to get into it, to enjoy it. Place a candy on their Bible, and they get it if they have a QT. Have the QT in a regular place and time. They should keep a daily log of what they learn and how to apply.
-- Memorize with them.
-- Communion at home.
-- Christ centered holidays.
