It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.

Notice first it does not specify what kinds of sins, or the frequency. This is the state of every person without Christ - dead in sins. This is our nature, to sin, and our state, to be dead in sins.
What does it mean to be dead in your sins? Separated from God, with no spiritual life, and no connection to the goodness of God.
How does a dead man get out of the grave? You can't - God has to lift us up by our faith. Note we were not dead, we were only dead in regard to any spiritual things. So, we choose to accept God's grace, and God, in His grace, lifts us out of the grave.
What a contrast this is to other religions that require some goodness from the person to get out of the grave. The number of followers are listed with each.
Atheism (1.1 B) - there is no grave to get out of, so any reward is in this life, and life is only what you can make of it
Baha'i Faith (5-7 M) - The soul is eternal and essentially good. We are already in a state of goodness.
Buddhism (360 M) - through the cycle of rebirths you get better lives by how you live each life (what if you digress?)
Followers of Deepak Chopra (unknown) - we have limitless potential in ourselves, but do not recognize this. It is up to us to improves our whole self (mind, body, spirit).
Christian Science (400 K) - Salvation is "Life, Truth, and Love understood and demonstrated as supreme over all; sin, sickness and death destroyed." It is up to each person. Matter and evil do not exist. Heaven is "not a locality, but a divine state of Mind."
Confucianism (5-6 M) - Purpose of life is to fulfill one's role in society with propriety, honor, and loyalty. It is up to you. After life is not discussed.
Falun Gong (10 M) - The Falun (wheel) is an energy source located in the navel. Goal is spiritual transcendence, achieved by practicing Falun Gong. It is up to you. There are countless gods and spiritual beings.
Hare Krishna (1 M) - Salvation from this Age of Kali is by a return to Godhead, accomplished through Krishna-Consciousness. It is up to you.
Hinduism (900 M) - Humans are in bondage to ignorance and illusion, but are able to escape. Purpose is to gain release from rebirth, or at least a better rebirth. It is up to you.
Islam (Muslims) (1.3 B) - Humans must submit (islam) to the will of God to gain Paradise after death. Five Pillars (to acceptance): Faith, Prayer, Alms, Pilgrimage, Fasting. HQ chapter 103 (of 114), verse 3 describes the four conditions required to avoid the loss and gain heaven "except those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to the truth and exhort one another to persevere with patience."
Jehovah's Witnesses (6.5 M) - Salvation is through faith in Christ and obeying Jehovah's laws. Much of it depends on you.
Mormonism (Latter Day Saints) (12.2 M) - Humans existed as spirits before this life, salvation is returning to God. Salvation by faith in Christ, good works, ordinances, and evangelism.
New Age (5 M) - Dawning of a New Age of heightened consciousness and international peace. Individuals can obtain a foretaste of the New Age through spiritual transformation ("Ascension"). Evil comes from ignorance.
Scientology (.1 - 3 M) - Human consists of body, mind and thetan; capable of great things. Gain spiritual freedom by ridding mind of engrams. It is up to you.
Seventh-day Adventists (10 M) - salvation is by faith in Christ; later prophets like Ellen White are inspired and authoritative over Scriptures.
Taoism (20 M) - Purpose is inner harmony, peace, and longevity. Achieved by living in accordance with the Tao. It is up to you.
Unification Church (1-3 M) - Purpose is true love and world peace instead of selfish love. True love and the kingdom of God on earth will be restored by the creation of "true families."
