Ephesians 2:8 - Additional Comments

When do we normally receive gifts during the year? Birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc. The very strange thing is that even though we delight in the gifts we receive on those days, there is still somewhat of an obligation to give. It's partially a free will gift, and partially an obligation. Of course, we give in loving ways to try and show that we do more than what is ordinary or expected, and that raises the generosity of the gift. Notice also that those who receive our gifts are almost always family, and sometimes friends, but rarely acquaintances. So, this gift of God raised the bar so high on giving, because we were not family, nor friends, but in reality at odds with God (see vss 1-3). And God steps in to give us not just a small gift, but the greatest gift ever given. He died for the unrighteous. What a God we have - what grace He shows in this giving.
So, this gift is offered to us. Oddly, this gift is offered to every person. We still have to receive it. What a strange thing to realize that this gift is wrapped and ready for every person, but so many ignore it and refuse it, this greatest gift ever given. Why? Because you can't really know what the gift is until after you receive it. And, the greatest value of the gift we cannot see until much, much later.
See the notes on verse 1 showing how many religions try to receive the gift of a good life or a heavenly life. They miss the mark. The sad thing is we miss the mark when we try to be good or do good things to try to get a better position in eternity. Now, avoiding sin does improve our relationship with God, but it does not affect our eternity. The ONLY thing that does is our decision by faith to accept Jesus.
