Ephesians 4:2 - Additional Comments
- Humility or Lowliness - does not assert his or her own importance or authority. We are to walk with a deep sense of unworthiness, in every experience and in every relationship. Phil 2:3-4 "consider others better than yourselves."
- Gentleness or Meekness - strength under control (example of 2 dogs playing); meekness. This is not lacking courage, self confidence, or "weakness". It is the spirit that never takes offense. It is longsuffering, i.e. self-suppression for the benefit of others. It demonstrates a submission to God's will and gentleness toward men, e.g. to overlook a wrong suffered and not retaliate. (See 1 Peter 2:21-23; 1 Pet 3:9.)
- Forbearing - accepting other people in spite of their faults. This is restraint under provocation with a liberal allowance for the faults and failures of others (as Christ did to us - Col 3:13).
- Love (agape) - includes seeking the highest good for others instead of for self. Love bears (i.e. covers with silence and acceptance) all things and endures (patiently) all things (1 Cor 13:7).
