Ephesians 4:32 - Additional Comments

Instead of the speech we must avoid (verse 31), what kind of speech should we have?
Kind - caring for the well being of others, without a view of yourself. A true focus on others, for them to do well, to succeed. A desire to be helpful, even at personal sacrifice.
Tenderhearted - sympathetic (understanding the place the other person is in), especially when the other person isn't acting the way they should. A willingness to bear the burden of others. Affection, softness, for others.
Forgiving - ready to put offenses behind you, to overlook personal wrongs against you, with no intent to retaliate. And we are to do this in the same way God forgives us! (See the Lord's prayer - Matt 6:12). This means a Christian will treat the offending party kindly even though they don't deserve it. Forgiveness isn't saying what they did was ok. You need to let the wrong go, without any right to punish the offender. (Especially since we are to forgive others as Christ forgave us! Col 3:13. See also Matt 18:21-35 about the slave who would not forgive.)
