Ephesians 6:1 - Additional Comments
This challenge is one of the 10 commandments - honoring your parents (vs 2, Exodus 20:12). By obedience, the traits in your parents that honor God will become the same traits in the children.
This obedience is to be outward expressions and acts, but also the inward reverence. Children should not only do the things asked, but they should also have the heart to obey. The internal desire for obedience is the proper state to be in. As parents work to get their children to obey, they need to not rest until they are getting internal reverence as well as external obedience.
Note they are to obey in the Lord - any request from a parent that violates God's laws are not to be obeyed. Our obligation to God is prior and superior to all others.
Or, "in the Lord" may mean that our obedience is to be for the Lord, as is our work (Col 3:23-24).
Also, it may come to where you need to leave your parents for the sake of Christ, and God will richly honor that - Mark 10:29-30. But beware, lest one take this as a license to disobey. These seem to be the only 2 exemptions from obedience given, otherwise obedience is required.
This is not only a challenge to children, but also to parents. Parents need to live their lives in an exemplary way so, as the children obey, they are becoming who God wants them to be.
Scripture tells us how to raise children:
- Gen 18:19 we are to command our children to "keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice"
- Deut 6:6-9 we are to teach God's word diligently to our children
- vs 4 bring up your children in the training and admonition of the Lord
This verse tells children to obey, "for this is right". It may not always make sense, nor seem like the right thing to do, but we are told it is. We need to trust God in that. This is how God designed it - the parents are to give the commands and the children are to obey.
