This is from Exodus 20:12. See also notes on vs 1.
2 other commandments before this one promised penalties for disobedience, but this is the first with a promise for obedience.
This promise referred to a long life in the land of Canaan, but here (vs 3) the promise is for a long life on the earth. God makes it clear that these and other Old Testament promises can be understood more generally.
