Exodus 1:14 - Additional Comments

The Hebrew for "bitter" means to grieve, provoke, vex. It was cruel enough that it caused all the Israelites to have poor attitudes. No one, it would seem, would fault them for bad attitudes.
The Hebrew for "rigor" means literally to break apart, but means with severity, cruelty.
The king's forced labor on the Israelites was intended to break their will. In the same way, Satan gives us difficulties to break our will. How much more difficult it is to maintain a good attitude in difficulties than when things are going well. Yet, difficulties, more than in good times, draw people to God. Israel's hard times may have caused them to look to God more than when they were not oppressed.
