Exodus 1:7 - Additional Comments
When it says "the children of Israel", it sounds like a nation, but if it said "the children of Jacob", it would sound like a family. It is both. In the O.T. days, many nations (or tribes) were named after the patriarch of the family.
The size of Israel is fulfilled prophecy - Gen 12:2.
Note that Israel not only grew in size (to where they outnumbered even the Egyptians - vs 9), but also in power, for they became exceedingly mighty (see also vs 9).
