It says "the LORD struck", but it was actually "the destroyer" (verse 23) who did this for God. From verse 23 is sounds like the destroyer accompanied God on this mission. The destroyer was the one who struck the first borns (again, verse 23).
I expect in this time period typically the families had many children. That is why Israel grew from 70 people to about 2 million in 430 years. This may have been 15-20 generations. Losing the firstborm, while agonizing, was not the death of the country. In America today, if each family lost their firstborn, the effect on relative population would be much more dramatic since the typcal family does not have many children.
Were there any Israelies in jail? How could they have sprinkled the blood?
