Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

Exodus 13:2 - Additional Comments

The firstborn is the most precious, like the tithe. God's wants what is most dear to us - He wants the first, the best. This will show God where our heart lies, by giving the best, rather than the leftovers.
Also, since the firstborns were saved from the destroyer by God (thru the blood), we dedicate them to God.
