And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

In Egypt, which the Hebrews had recently left, the Apis bull was the comparable object of worship, which the Hebrews were reviving in the wilderness. Apis was a bull diety and was the most important of all the sacred animals in Egypt. Among the Egyptians' and Hebrews' neighbors in the Ancient Near East and in the Aegean, the Aurochs, the wild bull, was widely worshipped.
