It is amazing how severe the penalty was for violating the Sabbath. Maybe they would not pay much attention to laws that demanded less. But God was certainly clear how He felt about it. It wasn't just that God demanded them to rest, it was that He demanded they set aside dedicated time to Him. And, it was more than just the corporate time, but also the personal time. That shows how much God wants us to have personal time with Him. And yet isn't that one thing we struggle with more than anything? How few people are consistent with regular personal time with God.
The real reason is a lack of enjoying God and a lack of perceiving a value on that time.
