On the journey back, as they camped for the night, God met Moses and would have killed him but Zipporah took a flint knife and cut off her son’s foreskin, and touched Moses’ member with it. She said, "Oh! You’re a bridegroom of blood to me!" Then God let him go. She used the phrase "bridegroom of blood" because of the circumcision.

Moses had not been with other Hebrews for 40 years, so it would be difficult to maintain a proper relationship with God without fellowship. Although, Midian was Abraham's son (Gen 25:1-2), so the Midianites may have kept some of the Hebrew faith. Moses had failed to circumcise his son, one very obvious commandment of God. He may have attempted to, but his wife, not being a Hebrew, refused to allow it, and Moses acquiesced to her desires. He put her wishes over God's commandments. May we never allow ourselves to not do what is right because of family influences (e.g. going to church).
