Galatians 1:1 - The Message

I, Paul, and my companions in faith here, send greetings to the Galatian churches. My authority for writing to you does not come from any popular vote of the people, nor does it come through the appointment of some human higher-up. It comes directly from Jesus the Messiah and God the Father, who raised him from the dead. I’m God-commissioned. So I greet you with the great words, grace and peace! We know the meaning of those words because Jesus Christ rescued us from this evil world we’re in by offering himself as a sacrifice for our sins. God’s plan is that we all experience that rescue. Glory to God forever! Oh, yes!

Galatians 1:1 - Additional Comments

Galatians is a letter from Paul directed not to the church in a single city, as some other epistles are, but to Galatia, a large region in the same area as modern central Turkey. It is probable that these Galatians were first converted by Paul, or, at least he had been discipling them, as is evident from this epistle, and in Acts 18:23, where we find him going over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia to strengthen the disciples.
While he was with them, they expressed the greatest esteem and affection for him and his ministry; but shortly after he left some judaizing teachers got in among them, who drew them away from the truths of Jesus, particularly in the doctrine of justification, by asserting the necessity of observing the law of Moses in addition to faith in Christ. They did so by also challenging the character and reputation of Paul, who they said did not deserve to be regarded as Peter, James, and John.
Paul asserts in this epistle that his mission and doctrine were both divine, and that he was not, upon any account, inferior to the other apostles - 2 Cor 11:5.
He asserts the doctrine of justification by faith without the works of the law, and to stand fast in the freedom Christ had given them.
