My dear friends, what I would really like you to do is try to put yourselves in my shoes to the same extent that I, when I was with you, put myself in yours. You were very sensitive and kind then. You did not come down on me personally. You were well aware that the reason I ended up preaching to you was that I was physically broken, and so, prevented from continuing my journey, I was forced to stop with you. That is how I came to preach to you.

Galatians 4:12 - Additional Comments

See how with each group of people Paul sought to fit in with them, the associate with who they were (1 Cor 9:19-22). But more importantly, he asks them to become like him, as he becomes like Christ (1 Cor 11:1).
As painful or frustrating as it is when your children in Christ (see vs 19) follow the wrong master, it is not really hurtful to the parent compared to the hurt in the child. It hurts the parent because of the love and care for the child, but the real hurt is in the child, who is having to live with the consequences of wrong decisions.
