Galatians 5:1 - Additional Comments

What freedom, what bondage? See verses 4:21-31. Bondage - having no choice but to sin. Freedom - being able to choose either sin or righteousness. In one there is no choice, in the other we have a choice. In bondage we are unable to choose righteousness, but in Christ we have that choice.
We have been given this freedom through our faith in Christ. Therefore, here we are exhorted to hold fast to that liberty, to exercise it through the Holy Spirit, and not fall back into the bondage we were in before Christ.(see 4:9). We are to die to sin, to live for righteousness (1 Peter 2:24).
Also, we are free from the law of sin and death, to live with Christ (Rom 8:2).
