Galatians 5:17

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Note that it's the nature of the tree to bear fruit. Apple trees don't bear oranges, and vice versa. As Christians, we have been given the inate ability to produce the fruit of the spirit because we have the Holy Spirit in us. So, we have the ability and the capability to produce the fruit of the spirit.
Yet, every Christian faces this internal struggle of the flesh vs. the spirit. They are in complete contrast pulling in opposite directions. Thus, we cannot do all we want to do, for sin gets in the way. We cannot run as fast as we want, we cannot run as far as we want, because of this conflist. The conflict itself slows us down, as it is distracting, and certainly any time we give in to the flesh, it slows us down even more.
How are we to run to have the greatest speed, the greatest gains? "Fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Heb 12:1-2). We are to be led by the Spirit (vs 18), meaning when we hear the Spirit speak to us, indicate the path we are to take, we take it. And 1 Cor 10:13 guarantees that path is always given to us.
