We tend to think of burdens as sickness, unemployment, loss of a loved one, loneliness, rejection, etc., and the people who bear them as victims. That is right. And if we are full of Christ we will be about the business of bearing those burdens. But Paul shows us in verse 1 that burdens include trespasses, and those oppressed include culprits. We should probably define a burden then as anything that threatens to crush the joy of our faith - whether a tragedy that threatens to make us doubt God's goodness or a sin that threatens to drag us into guilt and judgment. Notice how ready we can be available to help with certain burdens but not others, e.g. we help with moves or sicknesses but not with restoring one back to fellowship. Yes, the most valuable burden we can help with is getting others on track with God - the others pale in comparison.
If a Christian brother or sister is weighed down by a burden, be alert to do something quickly to help. The key is responding quickly, instead of mulling it over - that's usually just an excuse to find a way to bypass having to serve, to give.
This is the opposite of the attitude of the Pharisees, whom Jesus described in Matt 23:4 - they were the ones who placed the burdens on others' shoulders.
How might you be one today who increases others burdens? How might you be one today who bears others burdens? Or have you isolated yourself where you have practically no influence on others?
If I asked your wife, would she consider you one who increases or helps bear her burdens? How about your children? How about your neighbors? How about your co-workers? Do you increase or lighten their load? Or are you so non-involved you have no affect on others lives?
We are commanded here to get involved in others lives, and help lift their spirits, help lighten their load.
By doing this, we "fulfill the law of Christ". What is this? Jesus taught us over and over that we are to love others, and serve them. See John 13:14,15,34, 15:12, 1 Cor 9:21, James 2:8, 1 John 2:8-11, 4:21. This law is very different from the law we were freed from (vs 3:13, 5:18) - this is a law written on our hearts. The love of Christ compels us to do for others - 2 Cor 5:14.
