Galatians 6:4

Galatians 6:4 - Additional Comments

When you examine your work, what should you measure it against? God's word and your conscience, which the Holy Spirit guides. If you are a football player, we could measure your success against the stats that other player have. But that is not how we are to measure our work with God. First, we could easily become conceited, that we are actually a superstar. Second, we would fall so far short of the real mark that we should be shooting for. A baseball player would love to have a .400 average in hitting, but God's standard for us is to bat 1,000. It's probably a good thing that we don't have stats for how well we are doing with God's work, comparing it to the high mark that He sets - ""Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect." (Matt 5:48).
Regardless, we are still to continually examine our work, to see if we are doing what God wants, and to see if we are making progress.
"He had a rough year last year, but this has been a good year for him." - the commentator watching you. What would he really be saying about you? Would this, as the verse says, be a cause for rejoicing? We should be living our lives so it should be!
This verse also implies that it is your own work that you should be spending time evaluating. not the work of others. You should watch them to see what burdens they have, so you can help them (vss 1-2), but as far as works, we should be judging our own, not others.
