Genesis 1:2 - Additional Comments
Some Christians believe the "Gap Theory", which places millions of years of geologic time (including billions of fossil animals) in between these two first verses of Genesis. The problem with this is it undermines the rest of the six days of creation, because vegetation was created the third day, the sun and the moon the fourth day, and the fish and the birds the fifth day. Life could not have existed between the first and second day. Plus, it also undermines the power of God, for it doubts that God could have created the heavens in one day by His spoken word.
And, if the Gap Theory was true, there would have been a long string of people before Adam and Eve who did not have sin (Gen 3:6-7) and who did not have to work for food (Gen 3:17-19).
