Genesis 37:2

These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Genesis 37:2 - The Message

This is the story of Jacob. The story continues with Joseph, seventeen years old at the time, helping out his brothers in herding the flocks. These were his half brothers actually, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. And Joseph brought his father bad reports on them.

Genesis 37:2 - Additional Comments

We find Jacob, 17 years old, feeding the flock. Though he was his father's favorite, he was not brought up in idleness or comfort. Parents do not truly love their children who do not build in them a good work ethic. Those that are trained up to do nothing are likely to be good for nothing - they become a lazy person (Prov 10:26, Prov 20:4, Prov 21:25).
The bad report Joseph brought was probably with good intentions, seeing the character we find in him later on. It could partially be because of the prophet nature God had placed in Joseph, and the command from God to reveal misdeeds (Lev 5:1). Nevertheless, it is implied that this caused enmity with his brothers, for few can accept correction (Prov 9:7-9), especially from a sibling or spouse. (But we are challenged how to reprove - Gal 6:1).
This may reveal more about the character of the brothers than Joseph.
