Hosea 11:8 - Additional Comments

Should they be utterly and irreparably ruined, and be made dead in existence as they have been dead in their sins. Should they have the curse be executed upon them, that the whole land shall be brimstone and salt, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim (Deut 29:23). Ephraim and Israel deserve to be thus abandoned, and God will do them no wrong if he deal thus with them.
God is debating within himself whether to be merciful or just. They deserve justice, but God's heart is stirred with compassion. Not that God truly had a struggle, but He is showing us both sides of Him, and that He has the freedom to decide either way. What mercy it would be, for how adulterous Israel has been. Yet what justice it would be, for they deserved it.
Ephraim could be given up, Israel handed over, as a wayward child is given to the state, and his inheritance removed.
Should they be made as Admah and Zeboim, the two cities that with Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone rained from heaven upon them.
