Isaiah 5:2 - Additional Comments

" Ask: What are ways Christians can bear fruit?
" Suggestion: discuss the use of talents and spiritual gifts as a focus for enabling you to bear fruit
" When we become a Christian, God instantly prepares us to bear fruit, but it is limited. Further fruitfulness is the reward of initial fruitfulness. See Matthew 25:14-30, regarding the talents. To those who use them, more will be given. To those who do nothing, what they have will be taken away.
" See also Mat 21:19, when Jesus placed a curse on the fig tree that had no fruit, and it withered. The person without fruit, God takes away.
" From a vine we look for grapes, and from a Christian we look for Christianity. Is it obvious to others to which vine you belong, the true vine (verse 1), or a false vine?
" What is the fruit we are to bear? See the lists in Gal 5:22-23, 1 Tim 3:1-10, Titus 1:5-9, 2 Peter 1:5-8, Rom 12:3 -- this is the fruit in our lives. But also we are to produce fruit in others - 2 Tim 2:2, Col 1:28.
" A grapevine tends to prefer growth to producing grapes, so it must be cut back, pruned, so it can produce full, plentiful grapes. Otherwise it will have lots of activity, but no fruit.
" People tend to prefer lots of worldly, wasteful activity, rather than fruit for God. God must prune us, cut us, so we become focused on the right things, so we can produce much fruit for Him.
" We may question why we are having so much pain - it may be a result from sin (1 Cor 11:29-30, James 5:15), or it may be God's pruning, to enable us to be and do so much more than we have in the past. Either way, God is working to build us into more than we have been in the past. We should welcome it, looking forward to who we are becoming and to what God has for us to do. It is painful, but yields great fruit (Heb 12:8-11).
" Example: I lost my job, to wind up with a better job - we must be confident in the truth of Rom 8:28.
" Also, we should pay attention to it, to profit from it, instead of fighting it. We can squelch great things God has for us. And great things He wants for us.
" Ah, but there is a caveat, a prerequisite - see John 15:4 (you must abide in Christ, for without Him, we have lost our source of strength and nourishment)

Revisit: the story in the overview. God asks here in verse 4, "What more could have been done to My vineyard That I have not done in it?" It sounds like an exasperated parent.

Ask: what was God looking for from Israel? (see verse 7 - justice and righteousness)

Ask: God has some severe warnings in these verses (verses 5-6). Which sins were exempt from these conditions? (answer is obviously none)

Challenge: it is clear that God has a standard of righteousness. Are there sins in your life that you are not willing to confront, to give up? Do you have any secret sins that others can't see? God is very clear, an unrepentant life will suffer, and separate you from Him. And, a repentant life will reap great blessings.
Challenge: How painful it is to read about Israel, how over and over God tried to get their attention, tried to get them to turn to Him. Israel, Israel, how pitiful, what a shame. But (long pause), are you like Israel? Are there things in your life that are not appropriate, that are not holy, that God has been trying to get your attention on? Don't be hard headed, and suffer the fates in your life the God has to press onto Israel for their stubbornness.

Read: Matthew 7:17-20 - you will be recognized by your fruit.

Ask: What are different techniques for getting children to obey, to do something you've asked of them?
Discuss: The critical factor in child rearing is NOT to get them to obey your commands by action, but to obey in their heart. (This applies more and more as they age, since when they are very young, you can only require actions.) If you don't get their heart, you've lost the battle, because they won't obey when you are not around, especially once they leave home.

Challenge: Ah, if only you can capture the child's heart, eh? Wouldn't that be a great relationship? But, isn't God looking for the same from you? He doesn't want artificial actions, He wants your heart.
Eph 6:6 "not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,"
