Isaiah 7:9 - Additional Comments

Samaria was a region in the center of Israel, where the tribe of Ephraim was located, just north of Jerusalem. The king of Israel was Pekah, Remaliah's son.
God, through the prophet Isaiah, is telling Ahaz, king of Judah, that soon Israel will no longer be a nation. But He takes that opportunity to warn Ahaz that if He does not believe (and obey, the natural consequence), he will not be established, i.e. his nation too will fall.

Story: (From Fox's Book of Martyrs, but toned down) Thomas Haukes was condemned to death in 1555 for his Christian beliefs. In education he was learned; in person, handsome and of good stature; in manners, a gentleman, and a sincere Christian. A little before death, several of Mr. Hauke's friends, terrified by the sharpness of the punishment he was going to suffer, privately desired that in the midst of the flames he should show them some token of whether the pains of burning were too great to bear for the cause. This he promised to do; and it was agreed that if the pain might be suffered, then he should lift up his hands above his head towards heaven.
Not long after, Mr. Haukes was led away to the place appointed for his death, and at the stake, mildly and patiently prepared himself for the fire. There were a multitude of people all around him, he heard him speak many things, and then pour out his soul to God. Then the fire was lit. Near the end, when many thought he was already gone, suddenly and contrary to all expectation, this good man, being mindful of his promise, reached up his hands over his head to the living God, and with great rejoicings as it seemed, struck or clapped them three times together. A great shout followed this, and then this blessed martyr of Christ gave up his spirit, June 10, 1555.

It takes courage to be a Christian in times of persecution. But it is worth it, and we can do it.
Let's look at how Ahaz reacts to God's intervention.
