James 1:14 - Additional Comments

Notice the sequence. Temptation -> lust -> sin -> death. This death is likely the opposite of the life described in verse 12.
We can only partially control whether we face temptation. We should avoid situations that will place us in temptation. But we only have partial control. The next step is what we have more control over - the lust. Our specific lusts have been building in us from birth. Lusts for different things have been built into us by many different circumstances. Some lust for alcohol, some for members of the opposite sex, some for drugs, some for excessive amounts of food, some for money, etc. What has "life" taught you to lust for? Once these lusts have been built into our psych, it makes fighting the lusts so much harder. One may not lust for drugs but may lust for money, as that is what has been built into them over the years. What are your lusts? We have these lusts, because that is what has been fed to us, and what we have "eaten". Why do I not lust for drugs? That has not been built in me over the years. But the lusts I have, I have allowed to be fed, and I have consumed them. How do we make the right choices? Avoid the lusts. How do we avoid the lusts? Do not feed them. What are your lusts? What do you struggle with? How are you feeding them, and what do you need to do to stop feeding them?
(Recognize that the lusts you have fed over the years will be a continual struggle for you. Continually pray for God's grace to conquer those lusts, and to remove the lusts that make it so easy to slip into sin.)
