James 2:5 - The Message

Listen, dear friends. Isn’t it clear by now that God operates quite differently? He chose the world’s down-and-out as the kingdom’s first citizens, with full rights and privileges. This kingdom is promised to anyone who loves God. And here you are abusing these same citizens! Isn’t it the high and mighty who exploit you, who use the courts to rob you blind? Aren’t they the ones who scorn the new name—"Christian"—used in your baptisms?

James 2:5 - New American Standard Bible

Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world {to be} rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

James 2:5 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Hearken, my brethren beloved, did not God choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the reign that He promised to those loving Him?

James 2:5 - Additional Comments

A man's wealth does not bring him any closer to God, and a man's poverty does not distance himself from God. Therefore, we are to see him in the same light.
"There is many a man, whose wickedness renders him vile and despicable, who yet makes a figure in the world; and, on the other hand, there is many a humble, heavenly, good Christian, who is clothed meanly; but neither should he nor his Christianity be thought the worse of on this account."
God has a special place in His heart for the poor - see Psa 72:12-14. Actually, it's not just the poor, but the downtrodden and needy.
