James 5:3

King James Version (KJV)

Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

James 5:3 - Additional Comments

The treasure they have collected in piles appeared to have great value, but (see vs 2) it was rancid and decaying and of little real value. It reminds me of a piece of fruit that looks terrific on the outside, but you open it and it is mealy, dry, or even moldy.
Why is their treasure described this way? Think of a guy whose car, sport (e.g. golf), hobby (fishing), so had a grasp on him that his family fell apart. The car itself was in mint condition, but could be described as being full of corrosion.
