For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

They tried to hide their sin (vs 23), or to trivialize it, to diminish the importance of it, to ignore it... but to no avail. The sin was visible and obvious.
